Kyphosis

The Spine has natural curves. These curves are responsible for the normal posture of the body. However, excessive curvature can affect the body and make standing difficult.

Kyphosis is a condition where the Spinal Column curves more than it should. This causes the upper back at chest level to bend forward.

Most of the time, kyphosis doesn’t cause health problems or need medical treatment. In severe cases, kyphosis can cause pain or breathing issues. Severe kyphosis may require surgery.

Τypes of Κyphosis:

  • Scheuermann’s kyphosis
  • Congenital kyphosis
  • Postural kyphosis
  • Cervical kyphosis (military neck)
  • Hyperkyphosis

Management and Treatment:

  • Physical therapy: Stretching exercises and strengthening exercises for abdominal and back muscles to relieve pain and improve posture.
  • Pain medication: Anti-inflammatory medications to relieve back pain.
  • Back brace: It’s mostly common for children who are still growing and have Scheuermann’s kyphosis.
  • Surgery: A surgical procedure can reduce spine curvature. The most common kyphosis surgery is spinal fusion surgery.
